BQOTD: Gross Foods

Do you have any foods that you just CANNOT stand? Maybe foods that you wish you liked, but you just don't no matter how many times you try?

For me, there are three things:

-Eggs. I'm moderately allergic, and even the smell of eggs makes me want to vomit.

-Cilantro. I would LOVE to like cilantro. I love everything that it's in. But the minute it hits my mouth, it triggers a major gag reflux, and out it comes. {PS- Anyone have any good cilantro free salsa recipes?}

-Anything with soggy bread. Sloppy Joes. French Dipped Sandwiches. Biscuits & Gravy. The second the bread gets soggy, I'm done. I can't handle that texture at all.

What are yours?

  1. I can't eat raw tomatoes. I love tomato products and homemade salsa, but I can't just slice a tomato and eat it. Gross. I also am not a fan of sweet potatoes or squash.

My mom has a texture thing- no cheese on her salad, no cookies or chunks in her ice cream...weirdo!

  2. Lasagna. I want to like it, everyone makes it, but I just can't stomach it. The smell sends me running from the room.

Beans. Texture. Ugh. (Same goes for peas).

And Soup. Again, a texture thing, I think. Unless it's a chunky, stewy soup, I'm not eating it.

  3. Olives. Every few years I'll convince myself that they really aren't that bad and that I should try one - and every time I have to spit it out, I cannot stand them.

  4. HAHA! I feel EXACTLY the same way about cilantro. I can't eat things that even have a whiff of it. I've never known anyone else to feel the same way about it.

I also abhor cheese. Any kind. It makes me want to peel my taste buds off my tongue. ew.

  5. I'm a relatively picky eater & everything I dislike is linked to texture. Like Emily, I hate bean (I really want to like chili though). I also don't like bananas, but I like banana bread and a banana in a smoothie. I'm weird - I know.

  6. Ugh soggy bread. Just the thought makes me want to toss my cookies. Absolutely disgusting. When I was growing up, my mom would make bread and both she and my brother would eat some of the dough raw. It grossed me out so bad I would have to leave the room.

Also, I have an issue with milk. I cannot drink it and sometimes can't even tolerate it in cereal.

And you and Chad could be cilantro besties. He's the exact same way -he wants to like it, but even the smell gags him. Weird!

  7. Slightly more than ripe bananas. I like them green and when they have just hit being ripe, but after that, it's a no-go. The only time during my pregnancy I thought I would puke was when I was eating a slightly too-ripe banana. The texture is just yuck.

Chickpeas. I want to like them, they seem like I would like them, but nope. Not a chickpea fan.

  8. Love everything you posted! So, I think you be crazy ;)

For me though, I think the one of the only food-stuffs that I don't like is goat cheese. I wish I liked it because everyone always makes such a big to-do about it, but yeah... I just don't enjoy it.

  9. Cannot stand canned peas. The smell of them makes me sick to my stomach. Creamed corn is right up there too. Not a big fan of lima beans or okra either.

  10. I can't stand soggy bread either. I hate when you get a sandwich from Subway or something & put half in the fridge and when you go back the next day to eat it, the bread is all soggy. :-(

  11. Lettuce- I can't chew it. SO gross. I wish I liked it so I could eat salads! Also, potatoes- I don't like any form of them; not french fries, baked potatoes, mashed, etc...

  12. I can't stand mustard. the smell of it makes me want to vom.

I also don't like BBQ sauce. my husband says I'm un-American.

  13. ripe bananas, whole milk, and Brussel sprouts.

Yuck yuck yuck. My mom used to make me eat all of the above as a kid, and I hated it, even to this day.

  14. Do beer and wine count? I'm just not a fan and I so want to be. There is apparently so much enjoyment in a good glass or pint of either one. But I just can't do it. Ugh.

  15. I'm right there with you on the soggy bread. Gag! I'm not generally a picky eater but I absolutely can't handle ground beef. I can eat a hamburger but I can't take the texture of it all crumbled up in meat sauce, casseroles, sloppy joes, etc. Yuck.
Oh and I agree with the previous poster about beer-- I can't stand it!

  16. ONIONS - unless in powdered form, so it's a texture thing. I'm with Julie S on the raw tomatoes too... unless they are really, really ripe and thinly sliced on a sandwich. Oh and any kind of meat. I went vegetarian over 10 years ago because I didn't like meat or its environmental impact.

  17. olives, anchovies, spam, MAYANOISE!!! Just the smell makes my gag reflex kick in. Also soggy bread.

  18. Mushrooms. I've tried and tried and tried again and I can't bring myself to like them no matter how they're cooked.

  19. Oh my, there are so many foods I hate I can't even begin to cover them all. And I don't even want to like them...

Cottage cheese, any kind of beans (but especially refried, those aboslutely disgust me), peas, oatmeal (ok I do want to like oatmeal, but the texture is gross!), there are so many more...

  20. Fruit. They all make me gag.

Mashed potatoes, otherwise potatoes are good to go.

    And I hate beer.

  21. Dude. I share two of your three, for essentially the same reasons. Death to cilantro and soggy bread. Instead of eggs, though, onions. I wish I was allergic to onions so I could use that as an excuse, but I just hate them. The taste is nauseating to me. And I wish that weren't the case, because they are in everything.

And I sympathize with you on eggs. I love eggs, but every once in a while the smell is, indeed, nauseating.

  22. Hi! I haven't posted in quite awhile (blogs have been freezing up my work computer, so I try to stay in my Google Reader), but I couldn't pass this up, since you requested a salsa recipe! I'm with you - can't stand cilantro. I do, however, know how to make restaurant style salsa (don't have a recipe; i just taste it and add as I go).

Salsa is simply tomatoes, garlic powder, salt, and jalepenos. I used canned whole, peeled tomatoes, and put them in my food processor (keep a few off to the side though) to get the desired consistency (chunky or soupy). Then throw your jalepenos in the food processor with some salt and garlic powder (a pretty good bit of each), and the rest of the tomatoes. Pulverize it until the jalepenos are all chopped up. Then combine it with the other tomatoes, taste it, and add salt and garlic powder until it tastes right. If you put too much in, just add more tomatoes. :-)
