Weigh In: My Furniture Arrangement

This is our living room, and how it's been arranged since we moved in (excuse the messes!). I'm thinking that I'd like to change things up a bit, for several different reasons, one being that there isn't any place that we could actually put a Christmas tree--lots of people have suggested to just put it right in front of the window, but that wouldn't work for two reasons: (1) there is no outlet anywhere on that wall, which would make plugging in lights a pain and (2) we usually sit together on the big couch to watch TV, and the Christmas tree would directly block the view of the TV.

Here's what you need to know:

-This isn't a sectional--it's actually a sofa, loveseat, and ottoman.

-The TV in the lower right hand corner is sitting directly in front of a small half-wall. It isn't long enough to put either the sofa or loveseat in front of without it looking really weird.

-The TV hook ups are actually on the wall with the floating shelves, which means we're currently running cords all along two walls.

-Just out of the picture on the wall with the floating shelves is a door leading out to the garage. The loveseat in the left of the picture provides a walkway out to the garage (there are also bookshelves lining the wall behind the loveseat), adjacent to the door outside.

Here's what I'm thinking:

-I'm thinking about moving the sofa that's currently on the wall with the floating shelves to the wall with the window. I measured, and the sofa is just about the same length on the window. I don't mind having the sofa in front of the window.

-The loveseat would stay approximately where it is, so that you could actually look at people on the sofa and face them when you're talking.

-The TV would move to the wall with the floating shelves (where the hook-ups are)

-When it's time for Christmas, the tree would go essentially where the TV is now--in the corner between the sofa and the half-wall.

What do you think? Do you see a better layout option? On one hand, we'd lose a bit of floor space, but it's going to be awhile before we have a walker who needs that! On the other hand, I feel like having the couch and loveseat face each other might make things more "cozy"...
Edited to add: I don't know WHAT is up with pictures on my blog today! But this one has been fixed!

  2. Your idea for the new set up is exactly what I was going to recommend! Can't wait to see pics after :)

  3. Would having the couches face each other make it awkward to watch TV? If not, I say go for it. If so, then maybe leave the couches where they are, move the TV under the window, and put the Christmas tree in the half wall corner.

  4. Before I even read what you were thinking, I was thinking the exact same thing. And I really like the idea of the couches facing each other. Definitely cozy for the holidays!

  5. I agree with Kristal, if it's not awkward then go for it. Yeah it might look great, but you also have to think about the set up that works best for how you use the room. You could put the loveseat on the half wall maybe. Yeah it'd stick out but you could also buy a floor lamp or something to put there behind it.

  6. Love your plan for the furniture. I like couches facing each other! I was also thinking couch along the window and love seat floating away from the half wall (not against it), but hard to tell if there's room for that.

  7. I was going to recommend exactly what you were thinking! The only other option you may have would be to place the couch facing the window, maybe forming some sort of walkway behind the couch. Your TV could stay where it is or move to the floating shelf wall, and the love seat could go opposite the TV. then you could put the Christmas tree in either corner near the window, or right in front of the window, if you put the TV on the floating shelf wall?
