Thursday Thoughts and Snippets

-Yesterday was my dad's birthday! We were getting ready to go meet him for a birthday dinner when I got a message that he was going to the hospital for some heart issues. So, we headed over to the hospital instead, where I spent the next couple of hours doing this:

This wasn't the first instance of similar heart issues, and he actually already had an appointment with a cardiologist today, so the hospital ended up admitting him last night and they have been trying to both lower his pulse (which last night was holding in the 120's while resting) and monitor an irregular heart rhythm. I haven't heard yet this morning how that went over the rest of the night, but if they weren't successful over the course of the night, they were apparently going to shock his heart this morning to try and get it back into a regular rhythm. We'd so appreciate prayers!

-We got home from the hospital last night around 8:30pm...and I was so tired I didn't even watch Top Chef! What in the world?!

-Parenting lately....is hard. Lizzy's in a stage right now where she thinks doing naughty things is funny...and I don't know how to combat that. The other day, we were cleaning up the huge mess she had made in the living room. Like always, we set the timer for 10 minutes, and I told her that once the timer went off, I'd take away the books that weren't on her shelf. We've done this a number of times, so I KNOW she understands. She told me "No pick up books!" and then proceeded to sit down on the floor and stare me down for the next 10 minutes. When the timer went off, I took away the books that were left on the floor, and she happily said, "Bye bye books! Time-out now?" So yeah...this parenting thing is hard right now, especially since Lizzy Loo is so stinking cute.

-My niece Payton had her SEVENTH birthday party over the weekend, which is crazy in and of itself. But it was such a blessing to watch her--she was so excited about EVERYTHING, and I just can't help but smile looking at these photos!

-My brother-in-law and sister-in-law find out whether they're having a girl or boy for baby #3 today...and I am GIDDY. Seriously, so excited for them. And so excited to be able to go baby-clothes shopping again!

i've decided you can never put Lizzy's hair up like that again. she looks like SUCH a big girl. i mean, for a second i was like, oh that's not Lizzy, that's the 7 year old who has a face like Lizzy and then i realized, THAT BIG GIRL IS LIZZY!

    ;D

  2. Oh my gosh, I am so sorry about your dad! I hope everything turns out alright! Praying, praying, praying. <3

Also, ARG for Lizzy. I'm sure I was similar at her age; my mom once said to me, "Have I ever told you that somebody told me to buy the book Dealing with the Strong-Willed Child when you were younger?"

    :)

  3. That last photo is priceless! So sweet!

Sorry to hear about your dad...prayers being sent your way. And sorry about the rough parenting patch. If I had advice, I'd obviously help, but as you know, we haven't yet reached that gleeful time... ;) I'll come to YOU when it's time, k?

  6. So sorry to hear about your Dad. I will be praying.

I went to this parenting class when we lived in Texas, and I remember them specifically talking about how each child is different in the way that discipline affects them. For one, a time out is the end of the world. For another, a time out is fun. You have to somehow find out what impacts your child and then discipline accordingly.

For us, taking away toys and spankings are the biggest discipline. Spankings are a last resort, though we're not afraid to give one if it is well deserved. And doing it in a loving way is key. But, a lot of times, taking away Jaxon's trains is the end of his world.

Hopefully I'm not coming across as an expert, because I'm obviously not by any means :) Just wanted to share what I heard and thought was really valuable. Hopefully you can find out what makes her "tick" and then discipline accordingly.

Good luck, Mama. Keep going, you're doing great. :)

  11. Oh boy. Lizzy. Have you read strong willed child? I'm still making my way through, but it's at least making me realize there are those who are dealing with MUCH worse.
