So here I am eating breakfast. I don't particularly like breakfast, and being allergic to eggs has always eliminated a lot of options. But since I'm nursing, I find that I really HAVE to eat something. So here I am with my bowl of Raisin Bran, which I thought was a relatively healthy option.
And then I went to check my email, and one of Yahoo's headlines was "Best & Worst Breakfast Cereals". And you know what tops the list? The very thing I'm eating--Raisin Bran. Apparently, it has more sugar than Lucky Charms, Reese's Puffs, or Cocoa Krispies. Nice.
And here I thought that I was being good.
What's your go-to breakfast cereal?

Honey Nut Cheerios, hands down. M-F I have a bowl of this before work. I don't like many other cereals. I would have never guessed Raisin Bran as being very sugary because it doesn't taste all that good! haha Weird
ReplyDeleteNo way! And I always add a little sugar to my Raisin Bran.
ReplyDeleteI never would of guessed... and I'm eating Cocoa Krispies as I read this :o)
ReplyDeleteYou've GOT to be kidding me!!
ReplyDeleteI don't eat cereal for breakfast, I eat it for a snack at night while pregnant. During pregnancy its been honey nut cheerios, honey nut chex (Mmm! So good), and frosted mini wheats.
But, usually for breakfast I eat an english muffin with peanut butter on it (toasted of course). That's been good for me while pregnant to get some protein :)
But Raisin Bran keeps you regular! I'm a Honey Nut Cheerios or Honey Bunches of Oats kind of gal here.
ReplyDeleteUmmmm Reese's Puffs, Lucky Charms and Captain Crunch w/Crunch Berries.
ReplyDeleteI used to try and be all good and eat Special K and stuff, but the yummy cereals only have a little bit more calories than the "good ones."
They probably have more sugar, but I really care most about the calories.. and the deliciousness.
Wow. I never knew that about Raisin Bran. I would have thought it was a healthier choice as well. I haven't had it in a long time, but like Beth Ann, I used to add a bit of sugar to it too. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteCheerios. Plain ol' Cheerios. Love them! :)
ReplyDeleteNOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's my favorite cereal. :(
Though, I haven't eaten cereal since Isaac was about a week old because I cut out milk, so I guess it's not that bug of a loss. But still. Waaaaaaaaaaah.
P.S. My breakfast now consists of a boiled egg (sometimes 2) and a grapefruit.
ReplyDeleteSeriously?! Wow. I do a lot of honey nut cheerios and regular cheerios, but Raisin Bran is always my "healthy" option. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteRaisin Bran Crunch, which I'm sure is way worse than regular Raisin Bran :) I also LOVE all the sugary kids cereals too... especially Honeycomb and Cap'n Crunch
ReplyDeleteLOL- I just read this article! I suppose the raisins add a lot of sugar. I don't care for Raisins, so I like wheaties!
ReplyDeleteTry MultiGrain Cheerios- they are sweeter than regular Cheerios- but not as bad as honey nut cheerios. I read somewhere that you should try to get cereals that have less than 6 grams of sugar per serving. It is hard to do. Most have at least 9 . . .
ReplyDeleteThat's kind of shocking! But the truth is I really don't trust any cereal...even the so-called "healthy" ones. Everytime I eat a bowl, I feel like I'm not eating the best thing for me.
ReplyDeleteWhole wheat toast with PB and a touch of honey tops my list. Or a protein shake blended with skim milk and strawberries or bananas. Then I feel like I'm doing something somewhat good for myself :)
No way, I love Raisin Bran! Bummer.
ReplyDeleteI've been eating a lot of granola lately and egg white sandwiches (and maybe some pop tarts because the baby likes them). :)
But the good thing is that the sugar is coming from the raisins, right? Instead of marshmellows? I like Raisin Bran Extra. So good! The little yogurt clusters are amazing. And I've started eating Special K Granola cereal. It's really good, and it's perfect for snacking on by itself. They pack the box full too, which doesn't happen often these days.
ReplyDeleteWell, Crap! That is my favorite cereal. I just looked at the fiber and not the sugar. No wonder it tastes so good.
ReplyDeleteUh? How is it possible that it has more sugar than Lucky Charms? Lucky Charms has fake mini marshmallows in it, come on! I refuse to believe that.
ReplyDeleteI'm not convinced eating Raisin Bran is bad. There are many types of sugars, some better than others. The sugars to create and preserve raisins can't be as bad as those to make marshmallows or chocolate, right? I'll be bringing this up to Byron, don't you worry.
ReplyDeleteI love, love, LOVE Fiber One's Honey Clusters cereal. So good! I also really like Multigrain Cheerios, which I buy more frequently because they're less expensive, but when I have a coupon and/or they are on sale, Fiber One it is!
ReplyDeletelike we talked about yesterday ... we are an oats-eating family!! =) soaked regular or steel cut oats make an appearance on our table most mornings.
ReplyDeletehugs!
