What Do You Do When....

What do you do when your 1.5 year old decides that she's done taking naps?

Seriously. We're on day 2 of no napping, and this cannot be our new norm. CAN. NOT.

Rocking her to sleep? Doesn't work.

Laying down to watch TV with her and hoping that she falls asleep? Doesn't work.

Just putting her in her crib? That ends with hours of tantrums (interspersed with me going in to check on her, rub her belly, etc), screaming at the top of her lungs, and her putting her legs through the crib slats so that they get stuck...repeatedly. Also, kicking the wall and banging her head against her crib.

Heck, I'd be sorta-semi fine with her just playing quietly in her crib during nap time, but she's not even doing that...and I kinda feel like I might go crazy.

  1. I seem to remember that the twins I babysat for in high school went through this "early" - like age 2. They started having quiet time on their parents bed. Sometimes they'd fall asleep, sometimes they'd just watch the movie, but the deal was that from 1 - 3, they were resting.

  2. Oy, I have no recommendations, but wanted to offer a hug. That sounds like my worst nightmare ;)

  3. Oh man. I'm terrified of Ryann giving up naps early. I *think* she will handle at least 30 minutes to an hour of quiet time in her crib if she stops napping, but you never know.

I wish I had some advice for you, but I've got nothing. Ferber's book worked for us when Ry was 9 months, but that doesn't mean it would work now, or that you want to look into that. Good luck!

  4. I have no advice. I just want to give you a hug. Brayden only napped for 30 minutes today and he was an absolute terror this evening. :(

  5. I would recommend making it clear to her that from 1-3 (for example) is resting time, so whether she's playing in her room alone, or sleeping or whatever, she needs to rest and be quiet during that time. What about letting her lay/sleep in your bed, would that work at all? I know Jaxon would never go for that, but maybe she's just needing a different atmosphere for a day or two.

I am sorry. :( Either way I WILL be praying for you... I seriously cannot imagine.

  6. Question: Does taking a nap cause her to go to bed later than she used to? If the answer is yes then she's ready to go without one. It's hard to let go, I depended on that nap, but frankly I'd rather take my quiet time in the evening then get the tantrum, crash and then have her up with me til ten anyway.

If the answer is no then introducing quiet time is not a bad idea. It could be a transitional thing for her to eventually go without naps in another few months. Or it could be a phase and battle for power. Either way, down time in the day would still be nice.

  7. OMG that sounds hellish! i'm SO sorry!! :( i like to THINK that i'll let Lovie know she doesn't have to nap but has to relax and maybe even give her some books- but she has to stay in bed for X amount of time. but at 1.5, i'm not sure she'd get that deal yet. yikes, chica. in the past when Lovie's fought a nap, i'd let her cry for 10 minutes and if she was up and screaming, i'd take her out (only at nap time) and try again in another hour or two. she's never gone a day w/out a nap. she just wouldn't make it. i really hope she takes a nap today for you!
