Justin and I went to the park today with Renee, Payton, and Logan. The trees are FINALLY starting to flower, and so I practiced shooting on manual a little bit. I'm used to a ghetto old camera, and I still haven't really gotten the feeling of the new one yet. I find it a little cumbersome to change the aperture, etc. with the Rebel XS. Here's the weird thing--I can NOT for the life of me make my straight-out-of-the-box camera and lens go to anything below F-5. Am I losing my mind? I should be able to go down to at least 1.2 in Manual mode even with the basic 18-55mm lens, right?

Anyway--this picture is a little blown out, but I really like the look of it even straight out of the camera. I don't think I'd do a single edit to it in Photoshop!

  1. Oh my, that's a gorgeous shot!

  2. I love that pic! I wish flowers were blooming here.

As for the lens, at 18mm the lowest f number you will be able to get is 3.5 and at 55mm, the lowest f number you will be able to get is 5.6. This is of course assuming that you have the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. The aperture isn't a constant number with this lens so it changes depending on what focal length you are using. I hope that made sense :o)

  3. I so miss those flowers...makes me think of spring time on campus... :) I know you probably have some cute shots of those kids too...why're you holding out on us??

  4. Ditto Lori B on the aperture. If you want a lens that will let you go really wide open with the aperture but won't cost a lot look into the Canon 50mm 1.8. The only lenses that will let you get down to 1.2 are well over $1000.

  5. I am so jealous that it is starting to look like spring by you! It's so cold here again, and the trees look fall like.

    Another beautiful photo as always!

  6. Ditto Lori. The lowest F/ I can use on my 18-55 is f/3.5.

  7. I love it! Very creative! That's actually really cool.
